AMD Launches its Radeon HD 7900M Series Mobile Discrete GPUs
Apr 24th 2012, 05:12

AMD kicked off its Radeon HD 7900M series mobile discrete GPU family with the Radeon HD 7970M. Based on the 28 nm "Pitcairn" silicon, the HD 7970M is near-identical in specifications to desktop Radeon HD 7870, except for slightly lower GPU core clock speeds. The HD 7970M packs 1280 Graphics CoreNext stream processors, 80 TMUs, 32 ROPs, and a 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, holding 2 GB of memory. Its core is clocked at 850 MHz, with 1200 MHz (4.80 GHz GDDR5 effective) memory clock speed, amounting to 153.6 GB/s memory bandwidth. The Radeon HD 7970M, apart from the ZeroCore technology carried over from its desktop counterparts, also packs a feature called AMD Enduro Technology, which "seamlessly powers down" the GPU when not required, below even 1W. The HD 7970M, we're hearing, scored many design wins, and should be launched by several notebook vendors today.
