With the graphics pendulum having swung back into Nvidia's side with the launch of their GTX 580 as the fastest single-GPU card on the market, things are looking good for them lately. But the 580 launch took many by surprise, and this has created a rather awkward position for Nvidia's board partners, whereby they are now releasing custom models of the GTX 480.
It's not often we see older model cards being released after new ones, but that's exactly what's happening here. Normally that wouldn't be too much of an issue since custom cards often bring improved features and performance to the market, but the GTX 580 is extremely impressive, so we're a bit perplexed at what we see today.
Gigabyte is a board partner that's known for pushing the boundaries on Nvidia's reference graphics cards, whether it's a custom heatsink, improved quality components, or a factory overclock. And true to form, the GTX 480 Super Overclock includes all of these with an excellent heatsink, improved power design components, and a strong factory overclock. Also impressive is the cooling efficiency and lower noise levels of the Windforce heatsink, keeping temperatures in check when under full load, despite the huge overclock. And the aesthetics are great as well, as this is certainly one of the better looking GTX 480 models out there.
