As we saw recently with the ASUS Rampage III Formula, the Republic of Gamer products offer some serious features and performance for demanding consumers, satisfying even the most hardened enthusiast. Sometimes, however, a full-sized ATX motherboard may be suitable, and a smallform motherboard may instead be required, often to save some money or perhaps used for a LAN case build. Along those lines, today we are looking at the Formula's little sibling, the Rampage III Gene, a micro-ATX motherboard that promises virtually the same features and performance but in a smaller package.
Packed with an extensive list of features, the Gene looks very familiar, and in fact it is essentially a mini-Rampage III Formula. It also comes with a considerably lower price tag, though it's not inexpensive by any stretch. As we've come to expect from ASUS in their Repubic of Gamers product lineups, they bring top features, top performance, and usually top price tags as well.
Let's test drive the Rampage III Gene and see if ASUS can pull off another coup in its pursuit of top quality and performance in a micro-ATX motherboard. We have every intention of pushing this board like its bigger brother, so read on to find out just how far it'll go.
Features |
Rather than list every single feature the Rampage III Gene has to offer, we’ll just focus on the major ones, and we’ll also discuss a few in greater detail later in the review. True USB 3.0 Support Experience ultra-fast data transfers at 4.8Gbps with USB 3.0—the latest connectivity standard. Built to connect easily with next generation components and peripherals, USB 3.0 transfers data 10X faster and is also backward compatible with USB 2.0 components. True SATA 6Gb/s Support Supporting next-generation Serial ATA (SATA) storage interface, this motherboard delivers up to 6.0Gb/s data transfer rates. Additionally, get enhanced scalability, faster data retrieval, double the bandwidth of current bus systems. ROG Connect Monitor the status of your desktop PC and tweak its parameters in real-time via a notebook—just like a race car engineer—with ROG Connect. ROG Connect links your main system to a notebook through a USB cable, allowing you to view real-time POST code and hardware status readouts on your notebook, as well as make on-the-fly parameter adjustments at a purely hardware level. ASUS TurboV EVO Whether novice or enthusiast, TurboV Evo satisfies overclockers of any level. Intelligently push systems to the fastest, stable clock speeds, offering additional advanced options for breaking those records! ProbeIt ProbeIt takes the guesswork out of locating the motherboard´s measurement points, identifying them clearly in the form of eight sets of detection points so you´ll know exactly where to get quick yet accurate readings using a multitester. ROG Connect even allows you to flash your BIOS from the notebook, which means that you can OC your system to the max without any fear of permanently bricking the motherboard due to a corrupted BIOS. O.C. Profile Conveniently store or load multiple BIOS settings, share and distribute favorite overclocking settings The motherboard features the ASUS O.C. Profile that allows users to conveniently store or load multiple BIOS settings. The BIOS settings can be stored in the CMOS or a separate file, giving users freedom to share and distribute their favorite overclocking settings. GameFirst Low Internet latency allows you to frag more, and get fragged less. That's why ROG has introduced GameFirst, a feature that manages the flow of traffic according to your needs so that you can still listen to online music, download and upload files, and engage in Internet chats without sacrificing the low ping times you need to pwn your opponents. SupremeFX X-Fi 2 Built-in SupremeFX X-Fi 2 delivers incredible gaming audio experiences to ROG die hards. It features hardware-accelerated EAX 5.0 and OpenAL for ultra-real cinematic in-game audio. It even comes with THX branding, which makes games, music and movies sound way better! SupremeFX X-Fi 2 also implements gold-plated jacks and high quality capacitors to ensure high definition adventures in audio. CPU Level Up Ever wish that you could have a more expansive CPU? Upgrade your CPU at no additional cost with ROG's CPU Level Up! Simply pick the processor you wanted to OC to, and the motherboard will do the rest! See the new CPU speed and enjoy that performance instantly. Overclocking is never as easy as this. Of these features, a few will be explore here in greater detail, but a few that also deserve mentioning tare the solid capacitors and ferrite chokes that improve power efficiency and extend the board's lifespan, TurboV EVO allows overclocking control from within the Windows environment (and we'll examine that closely) and ROG Connect that allows you to remotely monitor and tweak the system voltages and overclock settings from another computer connected via cable. The Go Button allows an automatic adjustment of speeds, timings, and voltages after an unsuccessful memory overclock, for example, to avoid cold boots and annoyances. All of these are an enthusiast's dream setup for tweaking and overclocking. This is what makes the Republic of Gamers products special; it's not for the average user, but if you want the best then an ROG board is probably on your wishlist. Each of these bring something unique to the user experience, so let's move onto the specifications and then to the board itself.
