Intel's Sandy Bridge processors are fast upon us, which means that motherboard manufactures are gearing up for the release of the new motherboards based on the P67 and H67 chipsets. Each of these new chipsets utilizes new on-board technologies to enhance system performance and include the new LGA1155 socket type. Any speculation that Intel was going to make the new boards backwards-compatible have long since been debunked, but the new socket does keep the LGA interface, just with one less pin than the current LGA1156 socket.
Unlike the current Intel base chipset, both the P67 and H67 include native support for SATA 6Gbs, but the support is limited to only two SATA ports. The other ports on the board will still utilize the older SATA 3Gbs standard. USB 3.0 is also supported, but like its predecessor the support is reliant on an on-board NEC controller. Of course the biggest difference for the new chipsets is the support for Intel’s upcoming Sandy Bridge processors. These are Intel’s second generation core design and include many new improvements to enhance performance of both the CPU cores and IGP.
The boards we are going to be looking at in this preview are both part of the ECS Black series, with one using the P67 chipset and the other the H67. The Sandy Bridge processors are set to debut in Q1 2011, so we will not be looking at the performance of the new Intel processors in this preview, but rather the specifications and feature sets of the ECS boards.
